I have this thing for vintage travel posters. I love how they look. I love the colors, the fonts, and the iconic images. Really, I love everything about them.
When these posters were produced, people usually travelled by car, train or boat. Most of the retro-looking posters we see today come from the “Golden Age of Travel,” which spanned from 1910 to 1959. The design on the posters brings us back to an era when traveling was depicted as romantic and glamorous. Even some of the more common destinations are portrayed as exotic in these ads.
One of the most beautiful things about these posters is how the words and images work together to send a clear, memorable message. You only have to glance at a poster to catch the spirit of the place it is advertising, and to find out what you can do or see there. In fact, other than the destination city, most of these posters have very few words. But, what words they do have are used very wisely.
These posters inspire simple, yet powerful writing that sends a message in a split second. It might be good to step back from the cluttered billboards, articles and websites we have today, and take a page out of the book of vintage travel posters.
