Every Friday’s post is a collection of typos or grammatical errors I’ve spotted throughout the week. Sometimes they are things I find while out and about and sometimes they are things I find on the Internet. If you are anything like me, these typos drive you crazy, especially when they come from people who should know better.
I have to admit, when I was flipping through a mailer yesterday, this doozy made me laugh out loud.
Is it just me or would “potting party” be a better choice of words here?
This online news article lost its authority with me when the writer added a random period in the middle of a sentence. Let’s face it; this is a typo that a quick edit would have caught.
This is an easy mistake to make. AP Style for this holiday is April Fools’, with an apostrophe.
Again, a quick edit would have caught this extra word.
Word choice is very important. With one small slip, you could be sending the completely wrong message to your audience. Editing is also vital to good copy. With a professional writer, you know you won’t make an embarrassing word-choice mistake or miss a typo due to lack of editing.
One of my managers on the copy desk is fond of reminding us that a good copy editor has his or her mind in the gutter … maybe, given accidental drug references like “pot party,” she should say that a good copy editor has an immature sense of humor.
Haha! Well, if this was a product of a copy editor’s sense of humor, it sure worked for me! I’m sure as a journalist you have lots of insight into this.
