On Saturday, President Obama gave a speech in Roanoke, Virginia. I don’t want to get overly political with this post, but I was pretty outraged when I heard a quote from his speech:
“If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” — President Barack Obama
Yes, the president of the United States just stated that people who work hard and put all they have into their dreams didn’t really build their own business. I realize this is just a small snippet of a speech, but when you read the rest of it, the context doesn’t make the sound bite any better.
As a self-employed American, I find this insulting. I haven’t built a huge corporation, but I have built up my own personal business. And, no one got me to where I am but myself.
What about you? I’m curious what others, whether you have your own business or not, think. Do you feel someone else (or the government) built your business for you? Do you think businesses owe their success to the government?
